After his speech in front of the Republican National Convention Wednesday, Zell Miller (D-GA) was interviewed by Hardball's Chris Matthews. During the interview, Miller got so frustrated by Matthews' questioning of his speech that he said, "I wish we lived in the day when you could challenge a person to a duel." Of course, no muskets were handy to facillitate such a duel, not to mention that Miller was appearing via satellite, so no shots were fired. But this isn't the first time Zell went around challenging people to a duel. A few weeks before the convention, Slate Magazine reported that "upon leaving the governorship in 1998 Miller said that one of his greatest regrets was that he never challenged 'someone at the Atlanta newspapers to duel over their never-ending bigotry toward rural mountain people.'" I guess to Miller, challenging someone to a duel is a bit like the Fonz saying "sit on it." Of course, one of Miller's biggest claims to fame in the Senate before switching sides was to protest the planned Fox reality show The Real Beverly Hillbillies for its (potentially) offensive portrayal of "rural mountain people." The sad thing is challenging someone to a duel in 2004 using a distinctly Southern drawl probably does more for belittling those folks than anything the programming geniuses at Fox could dream up.
